Chapter One

The purpose of this book is to help leaders more powerfully engage their teams. Here are some research results regarding the power of engagement:

Your relationship with your leader and your employees is extremely important, as identified in this study:

In a joint study involving Ipsos-Reid, WarrenShepell, and the Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario (HRPAO), in 2004, found the top three contributors to absenteeism and health costs were depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders (66 percent); stress (60 percent); and relationship with supervisor/manager (44 percent).

In the book we will highlight what is important in those two relationships and you will discover how to…

  • Create a leadership legacy built on engagement intention, principles and values

  • Apply the 12 proven Leadership Engagement Behaviors

  • Provide results-focused feedback, both positive and constructive

  • Develop strategies to deal with bullying behavior and other types of conflict

  • Practice self-care to ensure that you are staying engaged and energized

  • Communicate to achieve maximum alignment and build trust

Intentional Acts of Character
The Precarious Kitchen: Chill the Worry and Warm the Heart

Brenda had worked for a restaurant company for fifteen years, having started out as a helper in the kitchen before working her way up to the position of cook. She was about thirty-five years old when she fell ill and required surgery to remove her gall bladder. As the company offered no sick benefits, not unlike many other service organizations, she knew that her time off would mean she would receive no money except for what she could receive through government benefits. Brenda, a single mom, was worried about rent, food, and her child. One of the staff at her restaurant saw how dire the situation was for her and started a fund to raise money to support their cook, whom other employees had long regarded as a vital ingredient of the restaurant. The managers and hourly workers, most receiving minimum wage themselves, pitched in, raising a few thousand dollars to help Brenda, who recuperated from her surgery knowing her team members cared about her well-being as much as her delicious lunch specials.
